Where Is the Ézaro Waterfall?

The Ézaro Waterfall (Fervenza do Ézaro in Galician) is a spectacular cascade in Dumbría, near the village of Ézaro (which gives the waterfall its name).

This natural wonder marks the end of the Xallas River, which originates in Santa Comba (A Coruña). The river stretches 57.36 km, with a 504.28 km² basin, an average flow of 13 m³/s, and a steep drop that culminates in a direct plunge into the Atlantic Ocean.

This makes Ézaro Europe’s only waterfall that empties straight into the sea!

Fun fact: The Xallas River is also called the Ézaro River, so don’t be confused—both names refer to the same river.

How to Get to the Ézaro Waterfall

By Car (Best Option)

The fastest and most flexible way to reach Ézaro is by car. The area is well-connected, and driving lets you explore nearby gems like Carnota Beach at your own pace.

  • From A Coruña (105 km, ~1h20m):
    • Take AC-552 (36 min, mostly highway) → Switch to AC-550 near Vimianzo (41.6 km).
  • From Santiago de Compostela (70 km, ~1h15m):
    • Follow AG-56 and CG-1.5, then take AC-550 at Orro.

By Bus

  • From A Coruña (113 km, ~2h53m):
    • Operated by Arriva Galicia & MonBus.
    • Drops you in Ézaro village—a 1 km walk to the waterfall.
    • Note: Check schedules in advance (15 weekly buses; fewer on weekends).
  • From Santiago (~101 km, ~1h56m):

Tip: The waterfall is well-signposted. If coming from Carnota, look for the turnoff just past the Xallas River bridge; from Cee, it’s at the end of Ézaro village.
